Types
Platform
A platform game is a video game
which tends to revolve around guiding an avatar to jump between things such as
platforms and obstacles that get in the way before the person is allowed to
advance to the next level. This is known as either jumping puzzles or
freerunning which is controlled by the player. There are many games that come
under the definition of a platform game, one of the biggest being The Legend of
Zelda, however there are other games such as Alpha Waves. Arguably the biggest
and most successful platform game that is currently out however is Mario Kart
which has been out since 1992 in many different games and so far Mario Kart has
sold 100 million copies worldwide.
Adventure
An adventure game is a video game
that involves takes the role of a protagonist in an interactive story. It
involves things such as exploration as well as puzzle solving in order to allow
someone to try and complete the game. Things like adventure games are heavily
linked with things like films as there are a lot of films either released based
on the video game version or a film that is heavily based on the concept of an
adventure game. An adventure game also tends to be a single player game which
fits in with the adventure narrative as it involves the one person exploring the
world by themselves. Examples of adventure games are games such as, The Walking
Dead Game and The Secret of Monkey Island.
First Person Shooter
A first person shooter also known
as an FPS is a video game which is usually centred on a gun and projectile
weapon based combat, a first person shooter is always through a first person
perspective which is why it is called a first person shooter. The aim of this
is for the player to experience the game through the eyes of the main
character. First person shooter games have been around for a while, games such
as Maze War in 1973 are supposed to have been one of the first games to have
used a first person shooter platform. There have been some big first person
shooter games in the past such as Doom and GoldenEye 007 with these games
setting the tone for first person shooter games, arguably the most well-known
first shooter game though has to be the Halo series.
Sport
A sports game is as it says in the name a game that
replicates sport games for someone at home, this involves many different roles
within sports such as team sports, combat sports and extreme sports. It can
also involve many different types of sports and can also change at how much
work you have to do playing the actual game. For example you can have games
such as FIFA which is a massive
worldwide game which is a football game which doesn’t really involve any
exercise, however on the other hand you can have games such as WII sports which
involves exercise which is the aim of the game. Other sports games can vary
from things such as Need for Speed a car racing game to NBA a basketball game.
Driving
A driving game is self-explanatory
in the sense that is a game that involves driving some sort of vehicle which is
usually a car, a driving game can either be in a first person view or a third
person view with most giving the gamer the option to choose between the two
rather than having just one set view. The games usually tend to involve the
gamer being involved in things such as racing competitions with it either being
pro racing or street racing. Racing games as I said in the paragraph can also
fit under the sports game category due to car racing being classed as a sport.
There are many different car games out in the modern day you have games such as
the official F1 game, Need for Speed, The Crew and so on.
Action
The action game is one of the most
well-known game genres out there and arguably the most popular with it fitting
into many different types of subgenres such as adventure, first person shooter
and even the platform genre. An action game is also one of the most challenging
games out of the rest as it requires the player to have a good sense of
hand-eye coordination, reaction time and for them to be focused. An action game usually tends to have the
player controlling the main character with the player trying to navigate the
main character through levels or stages while in the mean time getting through
it through methods such as fighting. Action games usually also tend to have
online sections which has people playing each other from all over the world in
game modes which involve fighting. Action games include games such as Assassins
Creed, Call of Duty, Battlefield and Mortal Combat.
Simulation
A simulation game can be found on both consoles and PC’s but
they tend to be more popular on the PC gaming world, there are thousands of
different types of simulation games that are available to someone for example
it
can range
from military simulators to farm simulators, the reason there are so many
different varieties is down to the fact that they are designed to closely
simulate aspects of real life or fictional reality and try to copy various
activities once again from real life and try to apply them to the game. This is
a unique game mode for a player as usually they are free to do what they want
and there tends to be no actual goals within the game for the player to hit.
Role
Playing
A role playing game which is better
known as an RPG is a game where the player takes the role of characters that
are set in fictional settings, the player is then responsible for acting out
the roles ahead of them that is within a narrative, in the end the actions a
player takes succeeds or fails according to game rules, if the player fails
then they have to re-do the mission. An RPG game has many forms, the original
form is known as a tabletop RPG and this where the RPG is conducted through
discussion. However, in the other form which is known as live action role
playing games (LARP) the player has to physically perform their character’s
actions. Examples of RPG games include Dungeons and Dragons which is arguably
the biggest RPG game to date.
Beat em
Up
Beat em Up games which can also be
known as brawler games is a type of video game that involves hand to hand
combat between characters such as the protagonist and usually a large group of
other characters within the game who tend to be the evil ones. The settings are
usually in more urban settings and the plot of the game is usually based on
revenge or crime fighting. Most Beat em Up games are set in 2D levels however
more recently they have adapted to a more 3D environment for players to play
in, the genre itself first started in 1984 when Kung-Fu Master was released however
probably the most well-known Beat em Up game and most successful is Mortal
Kombat which is known to be one of the goriest games in existence.
